Hi, I'm Dave

I'm an education leader, teacher and creative technologist with nearly twenty years' experience across computing, games design, media, business and post-16 education.

My career has taken me from teaching game development and building new courses to leading teams, developing curriculum, helping establish a new sixth form and spending a year as an interim head to steady the ship.

Somewhere along the way, I also won a BAFTA.

101010 is where I collect the things that matter most to me.

It's a home for my projects, ideas and experiences across education, technology and creativity. Some are things I've achieved. Others are things I'm still exploring.

Together, they're a record of what I've done, what I've learned and what I'm still striving to achieve.

A slightly unusual route through education.

I originally trained in Games Computing before moving into teaching in 2007.

Since then I've taught and led across Computer Science, IT, Games Design, Creative Media and Business, working in schools and sixth-form colleges across the East of England and Midlands.

I've always been particularly interested in what happens when education reaches beyond the classroom. Building new curricula. Creating opportunities for young people. Experimenting with technology. Finding better ways of connecting education with the industries our students eventually enter.

In 2017, that work led to me receiving the BAFTA Young Game Designers Mentor Award for my work encouraging young people, particularly those underrepresented within technology, to explore game development.

More recently, I've moved into senior leadership, helping to establish and grow a new Sixth Form College in Northamptonshire and subsequently serving as its Interim Head.

But I've never really stopped making things.

And that's what 101010 is for.

Selected Work

🎮 Games, education & BAFTA

How a small game-development programme grew into something much bigger, and my work encouraging young people to see themselves as creators rather than simply consumers of technology.

🏫 Building a Sixth Form

Lessons from helping establish a new sixth-form college. Curriculum, culture, growth, student experience and what happens when the plan meets reality.

🤖 AI, technology & education

Experiments, ideas and occasional rabbit holes exploring how emerging technology can genuinely improve teaching, learning and educational leadership.

What matters to me

Creative technology

Games, digital media, computing and the tools people use to make things.

Education

Particularly post-16 education, curriculum design and creating pathways into interesting careers.

Opportunity

Finding ways to help people discover possibilities they might never otherwise have considered.

Leadership

Building teams, culture and organisations, while continuing to learn from the occasions when things don't go according to plan.

Curiosity

Trying things. Making things. Asking questions. Occasionally disappearing down a rabbit hole simply because something is interesting.

101010 projects

Articles, videos, experiments, resources and projects will appear here as I make them.

Some will be useful.

Some will be speculative.

Some may be slightly ridiculous.

That's rather the point.

Say hello.

I'm always interested in conversations around digital and creative education, games, technology, curriculum and post-16 education.

I'm also occasionally available for talks, workshops, curriculum projects and interesting collaborations.

Why 101010?

There's no grand corporate story behind the name.

When I first started putting my work online, I wasn't particularly comfortable putting my own name above the door. 101010 gave me somewhere to put my ideas without quite putting myself out there.

101010 in binary is 42.

If you know, you know.

It seemed as good a number as any.

I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought "42 will do" I typed it out. End of story.
